Pillars of the Earth

I just finished Ken Follett's epic (tome?) called "Pillars of the Earth." It was like a gigantic soap opera on the one hand, an overly-adorned Chekhov play on the other, but in the end peaked at about page 500 and should have quite by about 600. Enjoyable, yes, but imminently skim-able.

The biggest lesson I had reinforced in this book, though, is that you don't change that much unless something makes you. Be it an exile to Spain or France, a betrayal, a rape, firestorm... something has to break before it can change and be rebuilt.

Further proof that it is through creative destruction that the world reforms stronger and better.
